A widely distributed S. American family of characiform fish. Particularly common in floating meadow habitats. Reserva Mamiraua has 9 known species. They are often torpedo-shaped fish with small heads and terminal mouths. They feed on both plants and invertebrates. Species recorded from the reserve include Abramites hypselonotus, Anostomus cf. taeniatus, Anastomus trimaculatus, Leporinus fasciatus, Leporinus cf. frederici, Rhytiodus microlepsis and Schizodon fasciatum.
